How to get a car accident report in Maine

The short answer
Request a Maine State Police crash or investigative record through its Investigative Records unit, using the request form on its website. A crash must be reported right away to police if it caused an injury or death, or apparent property damage of $2,000 or more.
Which agency has your report
The report comes from the agency whose officer came to the crash. On interstates and state highways that is usually the state police or highway patrol. On city streets it is the city police, and outside city limits it is often the county sheriff. Ask the officer for the report number before you leave the scene.

Whether you must file your own report
Maine does not require the driver to separately file their own crash report with the state. The Chief of the State Police already sends every reportable accident report to the Secretary of State's office.
