How to get a car accident report in Fort Worth, Texas

The short answer
Fort Worth does not sell its crash reports through a city portal. Since December 15, 2024 the police department sends everyone to the Texas Department of Transportation Crash Report Online Purchase System, the CRIS purchase site at cris.dot.state.tx.us.
Your Fort Worth crash report can take up to 14 days from the date of the crash to show up in the state search. If it is still not there after 14 days, call the Fort Worth police Records unit at 817-392-4160.
A Fort Worth crash report costs $6.00, whether you buy it from the state online or pick it up at the police records counter. A certified copy costs $2.00 more.

The records office
You can buy a Fort Worth crash report in person at the police Records section, 1000 Calvert Street. The counter is open Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and a report costs $6.00. The Records phone is 817-392-4160. Reports can also be sent to you by mail or email if you send the request and the fee.

If no officer came to your crash
Filing it yourself
When Fort Worth police decide your crash does not need an investigation, no crash report is written. The officer gives each driver a Citizen Accident/Crash Exchange Form and watches you trade insurance information. The only crash you can file yourself through the Fort Worth police online reporting system is a hit and run, and a hit and run has to be reported within 24 hours of when you discover it.

What Texas requires you to file
Texas does not require the driver to separately file a written crash report with the state. That duty falls on the investigating law enforcement officer, who must file an electronic report within 10 days if the crash caused injury, death, or property damage of $1,000 or more. Texas repealed its old driver-filed report requirement in 2017.
“A law enforcement officer who in the regular course of duty investigates a motor vehicle collision shall make a written report of the collision if the collision resulted in injury to or the death of a person or damage to the property of any one person to the apparent extent of $1,000 or more. The report required by Subsection (a) must be filed electronically with the department not later than the 10th day after the date of the collision.”
If the crash was on a highway
A different agency has that report
If a Texas Department of Public Safety trooper worked your crash on an interstate or a state highway instead of Fort Worth police, do not go to the city records counter. DPS sends you to the same Texas Department of Transportation Crash Report Online Purchase System for the crash report.
