How to get a car accident report in Dallas, Texas

The short answer
Dallas does not sell crash reports on its own website. The Dallas Police Records Center sends the public to the TxDOT Crash Report Online Purchase System, known as CRIS, to buy the Texas Peace Officer's Crash Report. The police department's own online crash report form is only for government and courier requestors.
A Dallas crash report is usually ready 5 to 7 working days after the crash.
A Dallas crash report costs $6.00 from the police Records Unit, whether you pick it up in person or ask for it by mail. Having it certified adds $2.00. Buying the same report from TxDOT online costs $6 for a regular copy or $8 for a certified copy, plus a surcharge.

The records office
You can buy a Dallas crash report at the police Records Unit inside Jack Evans Police Headquarters, 1400 Botham Jean Blvd., Dallas, TX 75215. The counter is open Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and is closed on weekends and holidays. Recorded information is at 214-671-3345. You can also mail the request with a check or money order payable to City of Dallas.

If no officer came to your crash
Filing it yourself
When no officer comes, you write the report yourself. Pick up two blank forms at any Dallas police substation, the State of Texas blue form and a City of Dallas Individual Accident Report. Return the Individual Accident Report to any substation, where it is given a Dallas police service number and kept on file as the accident report for your insurance company.

What Texas requires you to file
Texas does not require the driver to separately file a written crash report with the state. That duty falls on the investigating law enforcement officer, who must file an electronic report within 10 days if the crash caused injury, death, or property damage of $1,000 or more. Texas repealed its old driver-filed report requirement in 2017.
“A law enforcement officer who in the regular course of duty investigates a motor vehicle collision shall make a written report of the collision if the collision resulted in injury to or the death of a person or damage to the property of any one person to the apparent extent of $1,000 or more. The report required by Subsection (a) must be filed electronically with the department not later than the 10th day after the date of the collision.”
If the crash was on a highway
A different agency has that report
If a Texas Department of Public Safety trooper worked your crash on a state highway instead of Dallas police, do not go to the city Records Unit. DPS sends you to the TxDOT Crash Report Online Purchase System for the same CR-3 crash report.
